Danger! What You Know Can Hurt You!

10 May

Is it just me or does it seem that every time you turn around there is some person or product or website warning you about the dangers of living?

Yes, living. Or trying to live. Or maybe better yet, trying not to die, because basically life as you know it is out to get you.

Maybe it’s because we’ve become a nation where suing everyone is so prevalent, that people/companies are just trying to protect themselves. Or maybe the danger has been there all along but not until recent days were they mandated to tell you. Or maybe, just maybe, the news thrives on horror, tragedy and all-things-bad, that they are driving the recent crisis.

Here’s just a few examples:

1) I’ve been taking ibuprofen for years for everything from headaches to fever. I’ve never had a problem. It works. The other day, I picked up a package that came with a BIG STICKER warning me about all the bad things that could happen if I took these pills. Wait a minute! If I didn’t have a headache before reading this, now I do. I wondered if taking it was worse than just dealing with the pain?

2) My front porch steps were in need of a new paint job. I’ve painted them before sans mask, but recent headlines about airborne toxins had me thinking maybe I should wear a mask. So I go to my home improvement store and pick up a mask only to read the warning that says if I don’t use it properly it could make me sick or worse…dead!

3) I signed up for a wellness newsletter about a year ago. It used to be filled with helpful tips like what foods would make my skin look younger, exercises that could reduce stress and helpful mantras. Now it’s filled with things like “breaking up” with your favorite tv show could cause stress and  if you are exposed to low levels of sunlight and have a history of mononucleosis, there is a greater odd of developing multiple sclerosis.

I’m advocating for a healthier, happy life that is filled with positive affirmations, good ideas for a balanced diet and stress reducing activities.

My local news station has taken to having the anchors stand up (Why? It doesn’t make the news any easier to hear) and including an annoying scroll bar of other news that distracts from trying to listen to the anchors (who, by the way, look like they can’t wait for the break so they can sit down).

So here’s a challenge: how about some of these news organizations focusing on positive news…feel good pieces…things that might make folks smile instead of frown. Now I know they will argue that devastation and panic and worry is what gets headlines, but I’d be willing to bet that the station that reported on good, helpful and enlightening news would gain viewers/readership ten-fold.

Now, I’m getting down off of my soap box, taking it with me to the park, and doing some gentle yoga while I enjoy the sunshine.
