Pin Me ~ Week Thirteen ~ from my Pretty Posies Board ~ Petals Can Brighten Your Day

27 Apr

If you live in an area where you get to enjoy the four seasons, spring is an especially important one.

After a long, cold and snowy winter, you absolutely crave the warmth and color of spring. And pretty posies are the perfect solution to get you out of the winter blues.

photo(10)I really love the look of flower market flowers. There’s something about stems of gorgeous color displayed in various buckets that makes the flowers seem really romantic.

And with the warmer temps these days, you can find lots of flower market at many farmer’s markets. Fresh fruits, veggies and flowers…what’s not to love?

It was difficult to choose from all the gorgeous colors and types of flowers but there’s something about the tulip that just says SPRING! to me.

I couldn’t resist the gorgeous coral color.   photo(11)

Once the flowers fully opened up, the inside reminded me of a piece of cheese.  Can you see it, too?

Happy Thang: The tulips in my garden are starting to grow which means I’ll have more pretty posies soon!

Pin Me ~ Week Twelve ~ from my Product Shopping Board ~ How To Glow With The Best of Them

26 Apr

Raise your hand if you love beauty products?

Aside from shoes and pretty dresses, I don’t think there is anything more gurly than beauty products. And I love them all from nail polish to lipstick, from blush to sparkly creams.

blog mist 4That’s why when I came across the Must Buys From Target pin from my Product Shopping board, I just had to hop over to Elizabeth Dehn’s Beauty Bets blog and find out what goodies she loved.

I think what initially sold me was the J.R. Watkins Body Cream. Here’s what she said, “I could brag about how great this is or I could just tell you that IT SMELLS LIKE COOKIES. I keep it on my desk, apply it to my hands and let that yummy cookie scent gets me through the afternoon slump.”

As I was in need of some hand cream for my desk, love the smell of cookies and could use something to get me through the afternoon slump, I thought this was the product for me.

At lunchtime, I headed to my nearest Target store in search of cookies cream. Turns out they were out of the cream but they did have the body oil. And, as I was in need of some totally awesome and sweet smelling after shower body oil, I thought this sounded like a win!

They didn’t have the Grapefruit Oil Mist that was mentioned in the post but, OH MY, they had something better.

or

Lait de coco et miel. (In case you want to spiff it up).

When intially applied, you smell better than cookies. You smell heavenly.

The spray bottle makes it super easy to put on and yes, you glow, just like the darlings that walk the red carpet.

The smell eventually fades (which is good because I wouldn’t want it to interfere with my LOVELY perfume).

Your skin is soft. Oh so soft.

And you feel oh so very gurly.

Happy Thang: By the time this post goes out tonight, I will be relaxing under the stars with my Sweetheart who always smells sweet.

Well….unless he’s working in the yard…then, it’s sweaty sweet.

Oh, who am I kidding. It’s just sweaty.

Maybe they make a men’s line?

Pin Me ~ Week Seven ~ from my Things To See at The Met Board

19 Feb

So for week seven of my Pin Me project ~ 52 weeks of actually doing something with my Pins ~ I selected a pin from my Things To See at The Met board.

My Sweetheart gave me a membership to The Metropolitan Museum of Art last year for Christmas and it was one of the best presents I ever received! Whenever we travel, we always go to a museum. My favorite museum abroad has got to be the Museo Nacional Del Prado in Madrid. Beautifully arranged and filled with so many treasures. If you do nothing else, go to see the more than 140 paintings by Francisco de Goya.

I loved my membership so much that I asked him to renew it this year for Christmas (and squee—he did!)

It was very cold on Sunday and seemed like the perfect day to go to the museum (but really, when isn’t it a good day to go the museum)? I had wanted to see the current Matisse exhibit (through March 17, 2013) again. We had taken friends at Christmas time and I wanted a second round to enjoy.

Since we were there to see new stuff and old favorites, I decided to look up one of my pins: The French Comedians by Antoine Watteau (French, Valenciennes 1684–1721 Nogent-sur-Marne) currently on view in Gallery 616.

It is a delightful little painting that combines two of my favorite subjects: theatre and art.  It’s one of those treasures that if you don’t pay attention, you may walk past it. But it’s worth finding on your next visit.

John Singer Sargent ~ Madame X

John Singer Sargent ~ Madame X

Speaking of visits, I’ve had over a year to explore the museum and I still have yet to see all the galleries. The permanent collections have taken a back seat to the fabulous limited engagements. I try to see at least part of a permanent collection when I go but I have so many old favorites that I have to visit (such as John Singer Sargent’s Madame X) that trying to fit it all in a day can prove difficult.

The friends we took in December got a whirl wind tour of the Met. They want to go back (twist my arm) and take our time visiting about three galleries. If you allocated an hour to each, that gives you enough time to absorb the beauty and read the little stories behind the paintings. It also allows you a few minutes here and there to sit down on the benches to give your feet a rest.

If you’ve never been to The Met, it is a marvel. It can be overwhelming trying to decide what to see (Asian Art, Musical Instruments, Drawings and Prints, Egyptian Art, Medieval Art, Modern and Contemporary Art to name just a few). If you really can’t decide, my suggestion would be this.

Patio from the Castle of Vélez Blanco

Patio from the Castle of Vélez Blanco

Begin in the Patio from the Castle of Velez Blanco. You’ll find this larger than life size patio which was constructed in southeastern coast of Spain, made its way to Paris where it was sold to George Blumenthal who brought it back to his townhouse in New York and upon his death, was gifted to the Museum.

From there, make your way through the Arms and Armor section so you can see the suits of Armor on your way to The American Wing galleries which are three floors tall.

There are so many amazing things to see in this gallery including the entire room that was built around the painting of George Washington crossing the Delaware. This is the place where you will also find several John Singer Sargent paintings (the most important one being MADAME X).

While you are over there, stop in the gift shop on the first floor and pick up a copy of STRAPLESS by Deborah Davis. It’s a fascinating read about the painting of MADAME X. If you forget to get it here, no worries. You can pick up a copy in the main gift store where you came in on 82nd & Fifth. They recently put in a bench near MADAME X, so you can rest a bit before you walk across the entire building to the 19th and Early 20th-Century European Paintings and Sculpture.

These are the 800-830 galleries that house many of the famous works you’ve come to know by Monet, Van Gogh, Renoir and Matisse. You can pretty much stand in any of the rooms and spin around and see paintings you’ve seen in books, magazines and movies.

There are lots of benches in these galleries so take the time to take it all in (especially Gallery 822 where you can view Monet’s Water Lilies).

Then head down the stairs (or the elevator) to the first floor and take in the outstandingly, beautiful Greek and Roman Art gallery (150-172). Seriously, you can’t possibly go wrong with Greek and Roman statues.  Make sure you make your way down the hallway to the Cycladic Islands statues which you’ll find in Gallery 151.

This will also put you back next to The Great Hall where you began your day’s journey three hours ago.

Please let me know about your adventures at The Met and what pretty little treasures make your heart flutter.

Haven’t been to The Met? What is your favorite museum and why?

My Happy Thang: Anytime I step foot in a museum.

Pin Me ~ Week Two

14 Jan

blue polishSo for my second week of doing something with my Pins, I chose one of the selections from my Nail Polish board.

This is OPI’s “Nicole” line and it’s called “Stand by you Manny” and is from the Modern Family collection. I don’t watch the show, but I instantly fell in love with the color. It’s a very soothing sky blue with tiny reflective sparkles in it.

One coat is pretty sheer. There was a hint of blue, but I could completely see my nails.  Two coats gives you more sense of the actual color but still shows bits of your nail. I’m going to try a third coat when I get home today and see what that does.

Tomorrow, I’m going to go over it with a coat of Butter London’s Matte Finish Top Coat because I’m curious to see what the sparkles will look like in that kind of a finish.

My happy thang for the weekend was the NHL getting it together so we can have a half of a hockey season! Whoo-hoo! Let’s go DEVILS!

5 Essential Foundation Beauty Products

30 May

I don’t just love make-up. I ADORE it!

Since the age of 14 when my mother let me wear lip gloss and a teeny bit of eye shadow, I’ve been hooked. I wear it all–drugstore and designer brands. I have my tried and true products and then I also experiment. With the exception of anything in yellow, I’ve probably wore every other color on my eyes, my cheeks, my lips or my nails.

I’ve always been good about moisturizing. It’s the one thing that everyone can do with any product of their choosing and it makes a big, big difference. Especially when it comes to your hands, because ladies, we all know that the way to tell a woman’s real age is by looking at her hands.

But make-up is the icing on the cake. And what really makes icing look divine is the solid foundation of cake beneath it. A few months ago I decided to make sure my foundation was in good order. I’m not talking about the make-up, but rather my skin.

And I’ve noticed by pampering my skin that, not only does it look better, but so does all that fabulous make-up I love to put on. Here’s my five essential foundation beauty products:

1.  A-D-E Creamy Cleanser from Earth Science. This creamy cleanser goes on smooth, smells great and leaves your skin feeling soft. It can be purchased online. I picked up mine at Whole Foods.

2. After I read the article on Birchbox in the May issue of Matchbook Magazine, I decided to check out their site. They were offering a discount so I used it to buy Jurlique Rose Love Balm. WOW! Not only does it make your lips (or elbows or knees or any dry patch) feel smooth, but it smells beautiful.

3. Back in December, I believe, I picked up some eyeliner from Clinique. In my Bonus Day bag was a small round container of moisturizer. I have lots of them so I put it in my drawer of goodies and forgot about it. When I was packing for my trip to Antigua, I wanted a travel size moisturizer so I threw the Clinique one in my bag and off I went. YOWZA! The stuff goes on like butter (but in a non-greasy good way). The first thing I did upon my return was pick up the full size version of Moisture Surge Intense Skin Fortifying Hydrator. And as luck would have it, it was Bonus Days again so I received more goodies.

4. Mario Badescu. If you haven’t tried his products. Run, don’t walk to get them. The more products I try the more I love his line. It was hard to narrow it down to just one for this list, but I’m going with Glycolic Eye Cream. I originally scored this jar of amazement from a sale on Gilt. This is the first eye product I’ve used that when I wake-up in the morning, I actually look refreshed. You can purchase it online. Look for another flash sale with Gilt. Or get most of his line at your local Ulta store.

5. And of course, none of these products would work as fabulous as they do without a good night’s sleep. There is only thing that can get me to relax, rest my mind and get in a full eight hours of Zz’s and that’s Bath & Body Works Lavender Vanilla Aromatherpy Body Lotion. I use one pump to slather my hands (remember we’re trying to make them look marvelous, too) and then I gently massage my temples. And that’s it. Within minutes I’m off to dream land.

So those are my favorites. What are yours?

Top 10 Beauty Products

17 Jan

I admit it. I am a girly gurl! I looooovvee beauty products. The pretty smells, the lovely colors, the way they make me look and feel.

I am always on the look out for new things. I’m that gurl that will walk up to you and say, “I love your eye shadow. Who makes it and what is the color?” I could spend all afternoon shopping at Ulta, spritzing perfumes and trying out lip colors on the back of my hand.

And while I might pick up something here or there, I have a tried and true list of my favorite top 10 beauty products. These fab 10 have proven time and time again that they deliver.

Do you have a product that you adore? That makes you feel special, gives you extra confidence, puts the va-va-voom in sway of your step? Be sure to let me know what it is in the comments section below. I’d love to try your favorites. And who knows, perhaps you favorite will become my favorite.

1. Just For Redheads Luxury Lipstick in Enchanting Dream. This medium brown/mauve lipstick is luscious! It goes on smoothly, lasts for hours and looks amazing in person and in photos. While it is designed with redheads in mind, I think it would look good on almost anyone.

2. OPI nail polish delivers. They have the most amazing colors and when used with the base coat/top coat can last up to a week (including washing your hair, doing dishes and gardening). I included the image for Funky Dunkey (which was part of the Shrek collection). I get so many compliments when I wear this shade.

3. I usually shy away from celebrity products. But years ago my sweetheart bought me Lovely by Sarah Jessica Parker and I have worn it ever since. I get asked what perfume I am wearing all the time. It is subtle enough to wear everyday and seductive enough to wear out for a romantic evening.

4. If you have long thick hair, then you know what a task it is to try to come through the tangles after your wash your hair. Not so if you have Aveeno Active Naturals Nourish & Condition Leave In Hair Treatment spray. You can pick it up just about any place and a few sprays is all it takes and your comb or brush will GLIDE through your hair.

5. A few years ago, a lady I knew was selling Avon. I flipped through the catalog and saw there was a buy one, get one free offer on the Advance Techniques Daily Shine End Serum. Since I always had problems with my ends, I thought I’d give it a try. After using this product, I have four words for you: NO MORE DRY ENDS.

6. My great-grandmother started using Olay in her late 60’s and in her late 80’s, her skin was soft. In my first professional acting experience after college, I was sitting next to a woman in the dressing room that I thought was only a few years older than me. When I found out that she was TWICE my age, I asked her what her secret to youthful skin was and this is what she told me. Moisturize every single day. It doesn’t matter what product you use, but you have to do it every day. Remembering how smooth my great-grandmother’s skin felt, I went out that day and bought my first bottle of Olay and I haven’t stop using it since.

7. There is something about being on vacation that makes me want to choose unique skin care products. I think it has to do with the luxury bath products that you get in hotels and bed and breakfast establishments. While visiting Cape May, I stopped in the Good Scents store. If you want unique gifts (for yourself or others) then this is THE STORE to shop in. Luckily, if you can’t get to Exit O on the parkway, you can scoop up Archipelago Botanicals Morning Mint Body Wash on their online store.

8. Do you ever go shopping for one thing and then come home with another? That is so me. And sometimes I come home with both. This was one of those cases. I went for OPI nail color at Ulta and ended up coming home with Benefit Cosmetics bronzer in “Dallas“. It’s described as an outdoor glow for the indoor gal. It gives me a healthy look all year-long and, on those rare occasions that I actually get a tan, it really brings it alive.

9. For years and years and year, I had used L’oreal’s Voluminous Mascara. But then something changed in the formula and I was finding that by 5pm, I had two black raccoon eyes. So I went in search of a new mascara. It was about this time that Maybelline’s Volum’ Express Falsies mascara was getting a lot of press. Figuring why not give it a try, I did. I haven’t let any other mascara on my lashes since. Beautiful. Long. Thick.

10. I don’t know about you, but I’m always running a few minutes behind especially in the morning. I had always been annoyed with having to sharpen my eyeliner pencils, but it took getting a piece of the wooden pencil in my eye to be converted to the automatic twist up. Once I tried, I couldn’t believe I hadn’t always selected this style. Quick and easy to use, twist up pencils are the way to go. I got hooked on Clinique’s brand and although my personal favorite is grape, I also love roast coffee (a dark brown), shy brown (a light brown), slate (a gray), violet (a dark purple), true khaki (a green) and blue/grey (the name pretty much says it all).

Happy Moment of the Day: Recycling my Starbucks bag of coffee and getting a free tall coffee in return.
