Stop The World ~ I Want To Get Off and Write

26 Apr

It’s been a few weeks.

Beach Day

It’s Almost Time for the Beach

I think if you ask most writers we’ll tell you that, given the opportunity, we’d write all day and night. Too bad <insert life’s demands here> gets in the way.

When I started this blog, it was supposed to be an outlet for new writing. A (hopefully) regular way to keep things fresh and write about whatever was going on in the world or about things that interested me. It was going to be for those times when I was editing/revising/revamping my novels or plays.

Being a creative type, I have lots of outlets to channel that juicy energy. Sometimes it’s writing. Sometimes it’s painting. Sometimes it’s sewing. Sometimes it’s soaking up life for future inspiration.

And so I got away from the regular course of blogging.

Then, I decided to embark on a regular blogging adventure. I created “Pin Me ~ 52 Weeks of Actually Doing Something With My Pins.” My plan was two-fold: blog at least once a week and make something happen with all those pins I have pushed against my virtual cork boards.

I’ve made some delicious recipes, tried some new nail polish and read a good book. And I was also keeping up with the blogging. Until March 14, 2013, when other stuff got in the way.

It’s nothing major. Just home improvement projects here and hockey games there. (Let’s go Devils! Even if you aren’t making the playoffs this year). And a whole bunch of other must dos.

But, alas, that is no excuse to not blog. I made that commitment and, by golly, I will stick to it. (I hope).

I’ve actually been keeping up with my weekly Pin Me stuff. I just haven’t been blogging about it. So what does that mean?

It means I have seven pins to write about and pronto because I don’t want this stretching out to ten, twenty, fifty…

So here’s what you can expect ~ seven blog pieces coming at you fast and furiously. I’ll probably stretch them out over the next few days, but if you follow my blog via email, expect to get a couple o’emails from me back-to-back. I promise once I catch up, that it will go back to once a week. I think that’s a good amount of email to receive. :]

My Happy Thang is that today is Friday! Whoo to the hoo!

PS…what do you think of the new look for the blog? I might be changing it up seasonally. We’ll see how it goes.

Pin Me ~ Week Two

14 Jan

blue polishSo for my second week of doing something with my Pins, I chose one of the selections from my Nail Polish board.

This is OPI’s “Nicole” line and it’s called “Stand by you Manny” and is from the Modern Family collection. I don’t watch the show, but I instantly fell in love with the color. It’s a very soothing sky blue with tiny reflective sparkles in it.

One coat is pretty sheer. There was a hint of blue, but I could completely see my nails.  Two coats gives you more sense of the actual color but still shows bits of your nail. I’m going to try a third coat when I get home today and see what that does.

Tomorrow, I’m going to go over it with a coat of Butter London’s Matte Finish Top Coat because I’m curious to see what the sparkles will look like in that kind of a finish.

My happy thang for the weekend was the NHL getting it together so we can have a half of a hockey season! Whoo-hoo! Let’s go DEVILS!

Top 10 Beauty Products

17 Jan

I admit it. I am a girly gurl! I looooovvee beauty products. The pretty smells, the lovely colors, the way they make me look and feel.

I am always on the look out for new things. I’m that gurl that will walk up to you and say, “I love your eye shadow. Who makes it and what is the color?” I could spend all afternoon shopping at Ulta, spritzing perfumes and trying out lip colors on the back of my hand.

And while I might pick up something here or there, I have a tried and true list of my favorite top 10 beauty products. These fab 10 have proven time and time again that they deliver.

Do you have a product that you adore? That makes you feel special, gives you extra confidence, puts the va-va-voom in sway of your step? Be sure to let me know what it is in the comments section below. I’d love to try your favorites. And who knows, perhaps you favorite will become my favorite.

1. Just For Redheads Luxury Lipstick in Enchanting Dream. This medium brown/mauve lipstick is luscious! It goes on smoothly, lasts for hours and looks amazing in person and in photos. While it is designed with redheads in mind, I think it would look good on almost anyone.

2. OPI nail polish delivers. They have the most amazing colors and when used with the base coat/top coat can last up to a week (including washing your hair, doing dishes and gardening). I included the image for Funky Dunkey (which was part of the Shrek collection). I get so many compliments when I wear this shade.

3. I usually shy away from celebrity products. But years ago my sweetheart bought me Lovely by Sarah Jessica Parker and I have worn it ever since. I get asked what perfume I am wearing all the time. It is subtle enough to wear everyday and seductive enough to wear out for a romantic evening.

4. If you have long thick hair, then you know what a task it is to try to come through the tangles after your wash your hair. Not so if you have Aveeno Active Naturals Nourish & Condition Leave In Hair Treatment spray. You can pick it up just about any place and a few sprays is all it takes and your comb or brush will GLIDE through your hair.

5. A few years ago, a lady I knew was selling Avon. I flipped through the catalog and saw there was a buy one, get one free offer on the Advance Techniques Daily Shine End Serum. Since I always had problems with my ends, I thought I’d give it a try. After using this product, I have four words for you: NO MORE DRY ENDS.

6. My great-grandmother started using Olay in her late 60’s and in her late 80’s, her skin was soft. In my first professional acting experience after college, I was sitting next to a woman in the dressing room that I thought was only a few years older than me. When I found out that she was TWICE my age, I asked her what her secret to youthful skin was and this is what she told me. Moisturize every single day. It doesn’t matter what product you use, but you have to do it every day. Remembering how smooth my great-grandmother’s skin felt, I went out that day and bought my first bottle of Olay and I haven’t stop using it since.

7. There is something about being on vacation that makes me want to choose unique skin care products. I think it has to do with the luxury bath products that you get in hotels and bed and breakfast establishments. While visiting Cape May, I stopped in the Good Scents store. If you want unique gifts (for yourself or others) then this is THE STORE to shop in. Luckily, if you can’t get to Exit O on the parkway, you can scoop up Archipelago Botanicals Morning Mint Body Wash on their online store.

8. Do you ever go shopping for one thing and then come home with another? That is so me. And sometimes I come home with both. This was one of those cases. I went for OPI nail color at Ulta and ended up coming home with Benefit Cosmetics bronzer in “Dallas“. It’s described as an outdoor glow for the indoor gal. It gives me a healthy look all year-long and, on those rare occasions that I actually get a tan, it really brings it alive.

9. For years and years and year, I had used L’oreal’s Voluminous Mascara. But then something changed in the formula and I was finding that by 5pm, I had two black raccoon eyes. So I went in search of a new mascara. It was about this time that Maybelline’s Volum’ Express Falsies mascara was getting a lot of press. Figuring why not give it a try, I did. I haven’t let any other mascara on my lashes since. Beautiful. Long. Thick.

10. I don’t know about you, but I’m always running a few minutes behind especially in the morning. I had always been annoyed with having to sharpen my eyeliner pencils, but it took getting a piece of the wooden pencil in my eye to be converted to the automatic twist up. Once I tried, I couldn’t believe I hadn’t always selected this style. Quick and easy to use, twist up pencils are the way to go. I got hooked on Clinique’s brand and although my personal favorite is grape, I also love roast coffee (a dark brown), shy brown (a light brown), slate (a gray), violet (a dark purple), true khaki (a green) and blue/grey (the name pretty much says it all).

Happy Moment of the Day: Recycling my Starbucks bag of coffee and getting a free tall coffee in return.

10 Things I Can’t Live Without

28 Sep

I am a list maker.

I have lists for my lists. Usually, the lists contain all the things I need to do, have to do, must do and am afraid I will forget to do. On the rare occasion, my list will include something fun such as picking up material for a new purse idea.

Tonight as I was washing my hair and running through tomorrow’s list o’ things, I felt inspired to create a fun list. A list of little things that I enjoy. So here goes (in no particular order) the things I couldn’t live without (aka the things that would have to be with me on a deserted island):

1. My furry and scaly family members.

2. My man.*

3. Books. Lots and lots and lots of books.

4. My morning coffee.

5. Just for Redheads lipstick in “Enchanting”.

6. Nail polish.

7. Fabulous, sparkly, flip-flops in multiple colors (no yellow).

8. Kate Spade purse(s).

9. My electronics including iPod Nano, netbook and Kindle.

10. Traveling the world.

I realize that some of these things require electricity so naturally I would have to be stranded on an island that had some provisions (one of which would have to be a runway so I could take a plane to travel the world).

*If I were putting this list in order, my man would come first, but I put him second on the list to see if he reads today’s blog post <insert evil grin here>.

Happy Moment of the Day: Pumpkin spice latte and pumpkin scone at Starbucks for lunch yesterday. Still thinking about that devilish good lunch.

I used $3.50 CVS dollars to buy $55.29 worth of stuff

21 Jul

I had $3.50 in CVS dollars just burning a hole in my wallet. It’s a thousand degrees here today so I thought I should go shopping.

I initially had plans of buying two Diet Cokes and maybe a peppermint patty. I think $3.50 in CVS bucks would cover that.

Then, I remembered that I needed replacement blades for my razor. Sure it was going to cost more than $3.50, but it would be like getting one blade for free.

So off I went in a very air-conditioned car to CVS. I spied the Diet Cokes upon walking in, but not wanting them to be warm, I figured I would save that for when I was ready to check out.

The razor blades are at the end of Aisle One. However, at the beginning and continuing into the middle of Aisle One is make-up! Lots and lots of make-up. Being the gurly gurl that I am, I couldn’t possibly pass by without at least taking a look.

As I passed by the large display of Essie nail polishes, I remembered that Giada recently tweeted the color she wears on her show. A quick search through the pale pinks and I had Giada’s “Adore-a-ball” color in my basket.

Next up was Maybelline which reminded me that I just ran out of their Falsies Volume Express mascara. Well, I couldn’t risk not having long lush lashes in the morning so into the basket it went. Of course, they were having a buy one, get one 50% off sale, so I couldn’t possibly leave without trying to figure out something else I might get.

Up walks a fellow redhead and CVS worker who asked if I needed any help. I said I was just looking, but moments later had to get her opinion on Maybelline’s lip stain. She said they were quite a popular item (as was evidence from the small selection left to choose from). She has a preference for Revlon’s lip stain, but said they are all about the same. Oh, and a woman who bought a Maybelline lip stain yesterday, came back in and bought three more colors today. Well, that’s it! I’m sold! My 50% off item would be the lip stain in “Blushing”. Fellow redhead also recommended that, if I liked the feel of lipstick (and oh how I do) then adding a little lip balm over the lip stain would give me that feel. Was this turning into the best CVS trip ever or what, I thought!

I continued down the aisle checking out the Revlon stain. They were not having a sale, so I was assured my Maybelline purchase was, in fact, a very, very good one.

Oh no! I remembered that I didn’t scan my card at the little red box when I walked in. Midway through Aisle One, I hooked a left and walked up Aisle Two. Hair products!

Shield your eyes I said to myself. You just bought a bunch of new product not two weeks ago. But the hazel nut shampoo called out to me. “Another day, my friend. Another day, you will be mine. Today I came for replacement razor blades. And, um, some mascara and lip stain.”

I scanned my card and a long line of coupons spilled out. Most weren’t of interest with the exception of the $10 off $50 or more purchase. Surely, I didn’t have $50 in my little basket. A quick estimate and I was only at a little less than $20. I put it in my purse to use another day.

Another left hook and I was back at the beginning on Aisle One. No problem. Just need to head to the end and get the replacement razor blades. But wait! There was the L’oreal section. Didn’t I need foundation? Yes, I think I do.

A fan of the Feel Naturale brand, I was madly scanning for the gray playing card sized case. But alas there was none. Then upon closer investigation, I see they have changed their packaging to a mod silver with a new application roller. Hmmmm…Into the basket it goes.  (On a side note, I opened it up and used the handy-dandy roller when I got back to the office and I gotta say, I like it!).

Then something happened. I went left mid-way down the aisle.

Suddenly, I found myself in the card section. Did I need cards? Maybe. Perhaps some anniversary cards? Birthday cards? Didn’t find anything that made me giggle so I moved on down the middle of the store.

Tissues? No. Pens? No. Padded envelopes? No. I was staring into space trying to remember why I came to CVS when a nice lady asked me if everything was ok. I told her yes, I had some lovely new cosmetics in my basket, but couldn’t remember why it was that I came. She suggested I make a list next time. Good idea. Except I was nearly sure it was only one thing I needed thus a list was not necessary. We parted ways and I roamed the middle aisle some more trying to think of what I was forgetting.

Ah, it hit me then. Nail polish remover. I was going to need some of that if I wanted to remove my current color (Re-fresh Mint by China Glaze) in favor of Giada’s polish.

Back to Aisle One. Another hook left. Down to the end of the aisle where I picked up a big bottle of remover and walked right past the replacement razor blades.

To the front I skipped, beauty products in tow. While standing in line, I looked over and saw the gift cards. Oh that’s right! I needed a gift card for a friend’s upcoming b-day. Into the basket it goes. I’m next. The guy scans my glorious beauty finds, I hand him a $2.00 off coupon I found in my wallet. And a 25% off my entire order. Forgot I had that one. Then I see the total. What? How can that be? Surely not. $65 worth of loot?!

Well, I did get that gift card at the end so really I didn’t spend all that much on make-up. And then it I remembered. Coupon for $10 off $50 or more. Bonus! It’s been a great day at CVS.

I smile confidently to the young man behind the counter.

“Did you find everything you needed?” he asks.

“Oh, yes! And more.”

“Good. Glad to hear that.”

“I actually just came in for one thing,” I confess. “But I found so many other interesting things.”

He nods. “What was the thing you came here for?”

And then I happily walked out swinging my bag of beauty goodness.

(Note: It is now four hours later and I am writing my blog. It wasn’t until I sat down to write the blog that I realized I don’t have my replacement razor blades).

Lip Copy

16 Jun

Yesterday I stumbled upon Eccentric Owl’s blog page. It was a May 30, 2011 post where she demonstrated an easy eye make-up technique she uses daily. It’s a quick and fun little video and she is wearing the most amazing shade of lipstick!

So I wrote to her and asked if she wouldn’t mind sharing the name of it as well as the company that makes it.

Turns out it’s her natural lip color! Lucky Girl!

She said she had been looking for a similar color for a while and would pass along the info if she happened upon it. Which got me to thinking—-why don’t make-up companies do what home improvement companies have been doing for a while now. And that’s color matching!

Got a chip on that old dresser your mother gave to you? No problem. All you need is a small sample of that paint and they can’t match that particular shade you mother used back in 1983. Have a favorite burnt orange scarf that you think would make the most amazing shade for your dining room? No problem. Take that scarf in, they’ll scan it and voila you have coordinating walls to go with that accessory.

So why then can’t make-up companies do this same thing? You could take your favorite shoes, cloth napkin or in this case, your own lips, get it scanned and then have lipstick, nail polish, eye shadow, blush, mascara made from it.

I don’t think this sort of thing exists. If it does, please let me know where because I have a gorgeous Kate Spade purse in red that would make the best lipstick EVER!

It’s A Learn Something New Kind of Weekend

13 May
So I try to learn something new as often as I can. This weekend, I have three things in mind:I love to try interesting recipes and this one just sounds yummy with a capital “Y”. Thanks Girly Girl Army for listing it in this week’s newsletter

Spinach Strawberry Salad
Yield 8 Servings

•    1/2 Cup Olive Oil
•    1/3 Cup Cashews
•    1/4 Cup Warm Water
•    3 Tablespoons Agave
•    1 Tablespoon Lemon Juice
•    2 Teaspoons White Vinegar
•    3/4 Teaspoon Soy Sauce
•    2 Cloves Garlic
•    2 (6 Ounce) Packages Baby Spinach Leaves
•    1/2 Cup Chopped Cashews
•    1 Cup Sliced Strawberries
•    1/2 Cup Sliced Fresh Mushrooms (Optional)
Directions: Blend The Olive Oil, 1/3 Cup Cashews, Warm Water, Agave, Lemon Juice, White Vinegar, Soy Sauce, And Garlic In A Blender Until Smooth And Creamy; Chill In Refrigerator For 1 Hour.  Toss The Spinach, 1/2 Cup Chopped Cashews, Strawberries, And Mushrooms In A Large Bowl Until Mixed; Drizzle Chilled Dressing Over The Salad And Toss Lightly.

I also want to figure out how to use my weighted hula hoop. Apparently there is something called Hoop Dancing. Since I belly dance, I figure I can handle these moves. It looks super cool, but I am wondering if the waterfall and shaggy leg warmers are required? Hmmm.

And then after I have eaten my salad, and hooped danced myself to a sexy new figure, I think I’ll kick back and paint my nails. If I can pull off this newspaper technique, I think it will look wicked cool! Thanks BUST Magazine for the instructions.

Have a fabulous girly weekend!

Yes I Do Believe One More Organizational Magazine Will Help The Clutter

5 Apr

There are areas of my house that I absolutely excel in organizing and there are others that are in desperate need of help.

For instance, my nail polish drawer I would get an A+. I only keep bottles that aren’t goopy, where the color is still relevant and if I want to add a new bottle, I have to throw one away. This makes for a very neat and tidy drawer where I can easily access one of my favorite cosmetic products.

My desk…not so much. And it’s a tiny desk therefore it should remain fairly clutter free. But alas, I am a master at skillfully piling papers, books, pens and even exercise videos on my little work space.

And I know why I do it. It’s my desk. It’s the place where I write. It’s the place where I pay my bills. It’s the place where all my important stuff goes because, if it is on the desk, then I will certainly give it the attention it deserves. That is, if I can find it, without disturbing the not-so-important-stuff-at-this-moment-but-I-will-eventually-get-around-to-dealing-with-it-piles.

Sometimes if the piles get too big, I move them to the floor or precariously balance them on my desk chair (which of course, then doesn’t allow me to sit down to deal with said important stuff).

So although I am quite sure I have several organizational magazines in the piles, a few days ago I bought one more. It is the Better Homes and Gardens Special Interest Publication. In large letters across the top, it says: “Secrets of Getting Organized”. I knew it! Not everyone is well versed in the ways of organizing an office.  There is a method to the madness and for $6.99, I was going to be privy to this confidential information.

Then it has other inspiring motivators:
“Sort It, File It, Find It Faster!”
“Cut Clutter In Every Room”
“Simple Solutions From The Pros”
“Get Motivated and Get Started”

Yes! Yes! A thousand times Yes! That is exactly what I want to do. So I came home and proceeded to do everything but take the magazine out of my bag.

Then I thought this afternoon, you are already into the first week of April. If you don’t spring clean now, it will be May and the weather will be fabulous and you will want to be outside riding your bicycle or lounging on the porch swing reading a good book.

And so, I retrieved the magazine from my bag and read the first article which talks about getting organized in four easy steps. This I can handle. This I can do. Please tell me good magazine what those four steps to blissful tidying entail:

  • Step 1: Plan and Empty – Schedule time to organize and then get boxes ready for items to keep, donate, sell, recycle, shred or throw away.
  • Step 2: Sort – Make quick decisions on items. If you haven’t used it in a year, then time to pass it on.
  • Step 3: Shop – Measure your space, define your organizational style and then go buy items that will help you stay clutter free.
  • Step 4: Reassemble – Take time to live with your new area sans piles before putting it all back together.

So now I have a game plan. I’m taking the next hour to tackle my desk. I’m not sure who will come out on top, but if you don’t hear from me tomorrow, be sure to look under one of the piles.
